How old is your child?

7 Creative Party Invitation Ideas for Very Special Boys and Girls

When you’re a child, being invited to a party can be almost as exciting as the event itself. Just like we experience as adults, receiving a great invitation makes you feel special and builds anticipation for the big day. To make the friends of your birthday girl or boy feel extra lucky to be invited, try one of these creative invitation ideas. They’re much more fun to hand out than a template invite, and by involving your child in the creation, you’ll teach them the joy of making something for yourself.

Bake an edible invite

Bake some cupcakes with your child and write the name of a guest on each one using icing. You can choose the colour or decorations to fit the theme, for example, stick chocolate coins in the icing for a pirate party. By handing the cupcakes out at the end of the school day or sports practice, the invite is much more personal than something sent in the mail.

Send guests part of their outfit

If the party is themed, help your guests to get excited by adding something they can wear to the invitation. For a fairy themed party, you could give each child a wand with different coloured ribbon tied to it. An eye patch or a bandanna would be fun for a pirate party and they’re just small enough for an envelope.

Get creative with balloons

While a balloon artist can twist these into funny animals during the party, you can also use them for unique invitations. Blow up a balloon and use a peg to keep it inflated. After you’ve written the details on the balloon in texta, let the air out and tape it to a card. Your guests can then follow an instruction and blow up the balloon to reveal the words, how exciting!

There’s other variations to this too. You could place a small helium balloon in a box (secure it to the bottom with a length of string) along with the invite and confetti. The balloon and confetti will come out when the box is opened. If you wanted to be extra clever, and fit the theme of a magic or mystery party, you could even fold the invitation and place it inside the inflated balloon so it has to be popped to be discovered.

Make it glow-in-the-dark

This is perfect for an alien or disco themed birthday. Glow in the dark paint or ink is cheap to buy but fun for the kids to reveal.

Use a secret code

Little Sherlocks will love this one. Disguise the details using a simple code, you could write everything backwards or in a mirror image for example.

Give them a piece of the puzzle

Purchase an old children’s puzzle from an op-shop and send each child one piece with the details attached to it. Kids can bring it to the event and match the pieces with their friends for an extra game.

Fold some origami

An invitation in the form of an origami fortune teller, or cootie catcher, is great fun to play with. The child might not even want to unfold it to see all the details! If your child loves origami you could look up something to create that’s connected to the theme, such as a boat for a pool party.
